Today the SONNENTOR sun is going to rise for you

SONNENTOR has been going through life with a smile for over 20 years

SONNENTOR Kräuterhandels GmbH was founded in the Waldviertel in 1988. Starting point for the founder and CEO John Gutmann was the idea of selling organically farmed goods under the logo of the smiling sun on regional and international market. In 1992, an old farm in Sprögnitz was purchased and used as the business head quarters. It was converted to a production and distribution center and has been modernized and expanded over the years.

The SONNENTOR business idea is based on the concept of supporting small rural structures, which have a long-standing tradition in the Waldviertel district. To date, this business model has been the foundation of the ongoing success of the brand. For the continuous and consistent social and environmental commitment to regional suppliers, SONNENTOR has been recognized with the TRIGOS award in 2008.

With a 50 percent market share in the specialized organic trade (tea and spices, not including food trade), SONNENTOR is leading the market. In Germany, the company holds a 25 percent market share and ranks in the top 3.

When SONNENTOR started out in 1988, there were three organic farmers who supplied organic herbs for the company. Today however, the Austrian SONNENTOR family has grown to over 150 farmers, who grow high quality raw materials for the organic herb and spice specialist. SONNENTOR also consistently applies their philosophy of sustainable regional development on farming projects in the Czech Republic, Romania and Albania. In 1992, SONNENTOR founded a subsidiary in the Czech Republic and a cultivation project, which started in Romania in 1999, was then supplemented by a marketing partnership in 2006. For their communicative activities in Eastern Europe, Ecoplus International recognized SONNENTOR with a New Territory Award in 2010 and SONNENTOR was also awarded with the “Dr. Erwin Pröll Future Prize” in the “Neighborhood” category.

SONNENTOR currently has 135 employees working at their head quarters in Austria and another 60 in the Czech subsidiary. Since its founding year, SONNENTOR has had a constant annual growth of 10 to 20 percent. With products sold in more than 45 countries worldwide, the SONNENTOR export remains the driving force behind the company’s constant growth. Main export markets are Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. However, countries like Bali, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea and New Zealand are also among the SONNENTOR export destinations. Over all, nearly 80 percent of the products are sold abroad. In the past fiscal year (2009/2010), SONNENTOR generated a total turnover of 20.5 million Euros.

SONNENTOR – organic indulgence that is good for you

Again this year, the comprehensive SONNENTOR range has been extended with some exciting novelty creations. Whether it is “Sunny greetings” herbal tea, tempting new chocolate creations, tea compositions for mother and child, fragrant spices, or “Symphonia”, the new specialty coffee in the Viennese temptation range, all SONNENTOR products are characterized by high organic quality.

The SONNENTOR motto, “Today the SONNENTOR sun is going to rise for you” is reflected in the products of the bio-specialist and summarizes the company philosophy. Not only does the motto reflect SONNENTOR’s attitude of going through life with a smile, but also the fair partnership with suppliers, producers, employees and consumers and the promotion of regional agricultural structures in the Waldviertel and in other places – this is fair trade lived by SONNENTOR every day. For this reason SONNENTOR products require no additional logo. By enjoying the organic specialties from SONNENTOR, not only are you doing something good for yourself, but also for others!
